About John M. Clancy FAIA
A principal and co-founder of the Boston architecture firm of Goody Clancy, John Clancy’s career was distinguished by his insistence on socially responsible architecture. Over the course of his career as an architect, he devoted great energy and skill to designing projects that continue to enhance the lives of ordinary citizens.

A past president of the Boston Society of Architects and Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, John Clancy’s work in design included a wide range of architectural projects that reflected his commitment and deep sensitivity to the demands of today’s world and to the people who live in it. His architectural contribution to housing, education, environmentally sensitive buildings and historic preservation has made a lasting impact.

In particular, the need for affordable housing, particularly in urban areas, and how designers can help create high-quality living places became life-long concerns for John Clancy. Working with community groups, developers, government officials and neighborhood residents, he worked tirelessly, sometimes for years that stretched into decades, to bring affordable and mixed-use housing projects to fruition. His work in housing has been studied and emulated internationally. Known for having a discerning eye for design, he insisted on the highest quality. Exacting and always pressing for perfection, John set high standards for both himself and his colleagues. He often expressed his belief that “architecture should have a simple elegance.” His work was honored with many awards, including the Honor Awards for Design Excellence from the American Institute of Architects, The Boston Society of Architects, and the Urban Land Institute.
