Eucalyptus View (Escondido, CA)
designed by Studio E Architects
Spulock Poirier Landscape Architects (landscape architects, San Diego, CA).
Costing only $ 80-per-square-foot and built on 2.2 acres abutting a highway leading to San Diego, four flat-roofed, stucco-clad buildings house local agricultural workers and their families. The Eucalyptus View buildings wrap around a shared outdoor room and contain 24 units, plus a daycare facility and adjacent on-grade parking. The jury admired the integrity and coherent aesthetic grammar of the complex, whose simple massing, materials and details recall historic and vernacular precedents bungalow courts and Spanish mission architecture. Notable design features include semi-private porches and patios, staggered building sections with varying ceiling heights, large windows bringing light into high spaces, and bold, wood-framed awnings punctuating planar facades. Analytical diagrams helped jurors quickly understand the concepts. |
