Eucalyptus View (Escondido, CA)
designed by Studio E Architects…Spulock Poirier Landscape Architects (landscape architects, San Diego, CA).

Costing only $ 80-per-square-foot and built on 2.2 acres abutting a highway leading to San Diego, four flat-roofed, stucco-clad buildings house local agricultural workers and their families. The “Eucalyptus View” buildings wrap around a shared outdoor “room” and contain 24 units, plus a daycare facility and adjacent on-grade parking. The jury admired the integrity and coherent aesthetic grammar of the complex, whose simple massing, materials and details recall historic and vernacular precedents – bungalow courts and Spanish mission architecture. Notable design features include semi-private porches and patios, staggered building sections with varying ceiling heights, large windows bringing light into high spaces, and bold, wood-framed awnings punctuating planar facades. Analytical diagrams helped jurors quickly understand the concepts.
