HomeSafe (San Jose, CA)
designed by Studio E Architects
Spulock Poirier Landscape Architects (landscape architects, San Diego, CA).
With the collaboration of seven non-profit domestic and social service agencies, a local for-profit housing developer built 25 co-housing units on a 1.09-acre parcel, including on-site childcare and counseling center, for women and their children fleeing abuse. Four families share each attached house and communal kitchen. The architect defined clear public and private realms in this dense but intimate community by clustering houses, each with a porch, around a landscaped courtyard, the dominant shared space. Jurors lauded the cost-effective, unified design, citing the quality of the site plan, the straightforward building geometries, and the expressive but simple architectural vocabulary of pitched-roof forms rendered in stucco and accented appropriately with color.
