New Holly Mixed-Income Neighborhood (Seattle, WA)
designed by Weinstein A|U Architects + Urban Designers (Seattle WA) in association with Arellano/Christofides (Seattle), September Design Group (Seattle) and Tom Lawrence AIA (Seattle)…Popkin Development (development consultant, Seattle); Absher-Pacific (contractor, Seattle); SvR Design Company (civil engineer, Seattle); Nakano Associates and Swift & Company (landscape architects, Seattle); Magnusson Klemencic Associates (structural engineer, Seattle)

Seattle’s first HOPE VI mixed-income development, “New Holly” replaces an obsolete, 120-acre public housing community built for World War II workers. With all the old structures, streets and infrastructure removed, the “New Holly” team skillfully devised an integrated street grid plan to create an entirely new neighborhood of 1,200 dwellings - 800 rental units and 400 market-rate and affordable for-sale homes – plus public parks, play areas and community facilities. The well presented submission showed a systematic, kit-of-parts approach to vernacular housing design, echoing Seattle’s bungalow imagery and sloped-roof traditions, and with very good unit plans.
