Adelaide Avenue Neighborhood Revitalization (Providence, RI)
designed by Durkee, Brown, Viveiros,& Werenfels Architects (Providence, RI)
Yoder +Tidwell Ltd.(structural engineer, Providence, RI); Nation Wide Construction (contractor, North Smithfield, RI); and Clark Schoettle (Historic Tax Credit Consultant, Providence, RI).
At 15 separate sites in the gentrifying Elmwood Historic District of south Providence, the development team rehabilitated 14 blighted, multi-family houses and constructed one new house. The 15 buildings yielded 47 affordable housing units, all meeting applicable standards for rehabilitation. Financed by multiple governmental and non-profit institutions, the contextually sensitive project was skillfully programmed, designed and built with active participation by residents of the neighborhood. It convincingly demonstrates that rehabilitation and new construction are compatible and can help revitalize distressed neighborhoods undergoing change. |
